At Northport Periodontics and Implant Dentistry
We know patients often have questions about their care, what to expect, and how to prepare for visits.
Here are some of the most common questions we receive, along with straightforward answers to help you feel confident and informed.
A periodontist is a dental specialist focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease, as well as placing dental implants. While general dentists provide routine care like cleanings and fillings, periodontists have additional years of specialty training to manage more complex gum, bone, and implant cases.
Early signs include the following:
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Gum recession
- Tooth sensitivity
In many cases, gum disease can be painless in its early stages, which is why regular dental checkups are essential.
We use local anesthesia and other comfort measures to make your treatment as painless as possible. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure and only mild soreness afterward, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication.
You may experience mild swelling, tenderness, or bruising for a few days. We’ll provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you heal quickly, and most patients can return to normal activities within a day or two.
The time can vary depending on the number of implants and whether additional treatments, like bone grafting, are needed. In most cases, placing a single implant takes about an hour, and the healing period before final restoration can be several months.
If you’ve been treated for gum disease, we usually recommend visits every 3–4 months to keep your gums healthy and prevent the disease from returning. Your exact schedule will be based on your specific needs.
Gum tissue that has receded will not grow back on its own. However, procedures like gum grafting can restore lost tissue, protect tooth roots, and improve the appearance of your smile.
Please bring:
- Your completed Patient Forms
- A valid photo ID
- A list of current medications and dosages
Most patients can resume light activities the same day and return to normal routines within a day or two. We’ll provide specific recovery guidelines based on the procedure you receive to ensure safe and comfortable healing.
